Introductions

Well HELLO! This blog is an attempt for some not-so-tech-savy grad students to reach people on an off campus, so everyone can sort of be a part of what we're doing here on campus - and that is, to help support our student veterans and their families.

Dr. Katherine Selber, social work professor and veteran advocate extrordinaire, has aquired four graduate student interns this semester to aid her in her efforts to make Texas State University the most veteran friendly university in the world. We are well on our way, and we want everyone to know it, and to spread the word about our amazing support services and groups here on campus.

I will let everyone write their own entries introducing themselves, but for now, we just want to say hello, and to stay posted. There is definitely a lot to come.

  1. Hello all!

I am a participant in a group that is attempting to spread awareness and gain support to help pass the Home for Heroes Act of 2011, H.R. 287. Our U.S veterans account for 40% of the homeless population and there are currently 15,000 homeless veterans in the state of Texas alone.
This act will allow veterans the opportunity to obtain access to affordable housing and supportive services that are needed and very much deserved. More specifically, the Homes for Heroes Act of 2011 seek to employ the following measures:

 Appoint a special assistant to guide and supervise collaborations of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) & the VA.

 Provide more affordable housing through local construction and renovation, as well as Section 8 housing vouchers.

 Offer supportive services to address issues such as: substance abuse, mental health, counseling, etc.

    What You Can Do:

 Write a letter to your district representative asking for support of the bill.

 Promote awareness of the bill in your community and on the Texas State campus.
